You need the application program HyperSlider 1.8 (or a later version) in order to view the show.
HyperSlider 1.8 is distributed together with the demo show.
Be sure that QuickTime is installed into your System.
The Demo Show illustrates some of the basic features of HyperSlider:
- creation of interactive slide shows with hyperlinks
- simple serial slide shows which can run automatically
- placing text and graphics on the slides
- many different transition effects
- playing sounds when activating a hyperlink
- placing QuickTime movies on a slide to create animations
- using aliases for special effects
Ñ Troubleshooting
HyperSlider may display the error message "HyperSlider couldn't find one or more slides..." when you try to open the Demo Show. This means that the Demo Show has been compressed incorrectly by some shareware distributor. You can easily fix this by following these instructions:
- Open the "Pictures" folder
- Make an alias for the file "Door closed" and make sure it's name reads "Door closed alias"
- Do the same for "21.bk", "23.fwd" and "Light off".
- Make a second alias for the files "21.bk" and "23.fwd"
and make sure their names read "21.bk alias 2" and "23.fwd alias 2", respectively.
Ñ How the Demo Show was done
The first step when creating a multimedia presentation is to prepare the
slides, graphics, movies and sounds which will be combined to a show in HyperSlider.
The slides are from a PhotoCD. I imported them into Photoshop and saved them as PICT files with JPEG compression (medium quality). I chose the compression in order to save disk space. It has the disadvantage that you are not able to view the pictures without the QuickTime system extension.
The sounds were recorded with the built in microphone of the Mac. HyperSlider can play System-7 sounds and AIFF sounds.
The home slide is the first slide to appear after opening the show. It is the title slide. The background picture ("door closed") appears on two slides of the show. In HyperSlider each slide is associated to a unique PICT file. So I created an alias for the PICT file "door closed" and made it the home slide. Then I placed a text on the slide. Since the used font is not in everybody's system, I converted the font to a pixmap graphic ("Convert to picture..." in the Graphics menu). A hyperlink to the file "door closed" extends over all of the picture (use command-drag to create a hyperlink). It plays a sound when starting the transition and another one when ending it. The transition effect is "dissolve".
Throughout the rest of the show a "map" button appears on the screen below the slides. I prepared this small graphic in Photoshop, copied it, and pasted it onto the first slide. I used option-drag to position the button. Then I copied it again (Option-click to select the graphics-element, choose copy from the Edit-menu while keeping the option key pressed. Or use the graphics tool to select the button, press command-c to copy it and switch back to the browse tool). Then I browsed through the whole show and pasted the button on each slide using command-v. Finally, I did the same with the hyperlink placed on top of the button.
For the map slide I created an empty slide (Slide Show menu). Then I pasted the map (which was prepared in Canvas and Photoshop) on it. For the icons I could proceed as follows: PICT files saved in Photoshop already have small icons showing its content. I used the Finder command "get info" on the PICT file, clicked into the icon, copied it, and then placed it onto the "map" slide. Hyperlinks to the corresponding slides are placed on each icon.
The transition "door closed" to "door open" uses the effect "wipe left" and two sounds, played at the mouseclick and during the transition. An effect like this is only possible if the two slides are prepared to fit exactly on top of each other. The same problem appeared for the pair "light on" and "light off".
You can view the show also as a serial show. Press the arrow key -> to go the the next slide. Or change the settings of the Serial Segment Options to view an automatic show. Note, however that not all slides of the show have been added to the serial segment.
There are two small QuickTime movies hidden in the show - can you find them?. They can only be seen if you press the right "button". A small part of the slide which should contain the animation was copied and used as a background for the animation. The animation was then created slide by slide in Photoshop and after that combined into a small Quicktime movie. The first picture of the movie contains only the background. Hence if the movie is placed at the right position on the slide, it becomes invisible. Usually, a movie without controller is played automatically in HyperSlider when you come to the slide with the movie (- provided the "automatic show" is enabled, see the Slide Show menu. Starting with version 1.8, automatic shows are enabled by default). So in order to achieved the desired behaviour I did the following. I created two aliases of the slide containing the movie. The original slide contains a hyperlink placed over the magic button. It leads to the alias slide with the movie (with the fast cut effect). So when the button is pressed, the transition to the movie-slide is made unnoticed and the movie starts immediately. Then I made a serial segment consisting only of the alias slide with the movie and the second alias. The option "go next when finished" is checked in the movie dialog (which can be invoked by option-double clicking the movie). Hence after playing the movie, HyperSlider makes again an unoticed transition to the second alias. The second alias is necessary because one slide can be used in only one serial segment (The original slide already was in a serial segment containing the other slides). After you have viewed the movie, you are no longer on the original slide, but on the second alias slide. It has the same links as the original slide, except for the link to the alias slide with the movie. You may also notice that the slide isn't in the main serial segment. By pressing the left arrow key, you'll get to the slide with the movies again. When you use one of the hyperlinks on the slide and then go back to it again by clicking on a hyperlink (not by using the go back command), you will be taken to the original slide again (That means that the link to the alias slide with the movie is there again).
